    Meet the College of Communication’s newest facul Meet the College of Communication’s newest faculty members: Professor Majja Dennis and Dr. Chris Chao Su!

A Massachusetts native, Professor Dennis has been working in the communications field for over 20 years and will be teaching COM CM 217 (Introduction to Advertising) and COM CM 419/721 (Advertising Management).

Dr. Su has studied at universities all over the world, and specializes in tracking audience consumption of digital media through computational methods. He will be teaching COM EM 777 (Masters Collaboratory Project).

    COM alumna, Britney Beale Hampton (CGS ‘04, COM COM alumna, Britney Beale Hampton (CGS ‘04, COM ‘06), launched Purifly - a disinfecting service to target the specific needs of the pandemic. Purifly uses unique methods to disinfect commercial spaces, ensuring full protection against bacteria and viruses. Despite working in the commercial cleaning industry for a decade, Hampton’s entrepreneurial spirit started when she worked full time in residential development sales while taking classes at COM.     Today, COM at BU welcomed Sam Howe (COM’14), Eli Today, COM at BU welcomed Sam Howe (COM’14), Elizabeth Fierman (COM’08) and TJ Keitt (COM’03’05), moderated by COM Director of Career Services, Patrick Nelson, to discuss networking and the job search during COVID-19. Howe is a Senior VP at BCW Global; Fierman is a Senior Manager at ESPN; and Keitt is a Principal Analyst at Forrester. They discussed the value of having the opportunity to reach out to anyone on LinkedIn. Given how convenient it is, many people are inclined to make time on Zoom or engage in a simple cell phone call to help students. When it comes to reaching out to professionals, Fierman said, “Generally speaking, most people want to help.” Regarding the job search overall, they believe that a huge part of having success is staying positive throughout the whole process.

    Michael Braun (COM’05), Head of Communications a Michael Braun (COM’05), Head of Communications at IL MAKIAGE and Vice President of Communications at Hydrow, recently sat down with The BU Communicator to share his story. With a passion for Public Relations that has grown in him since high school and his adventurous personality, Braun never stopped looking for opportunities to gain professional experiences in different industries. Whether it’s in politics, traditional PR, technology or cosmetics, Michael stressed how important it is to him to broaden his career path and accumulate experiences throughout his life.     Olivia Armstrong (COM’16), an adjunct professor Olivia Armstrong (COM’16), an adjunct professor at Boston University, recently sat down for a Q&A with The BU COMmunicator to share her journey in the communication industry. After working as a marketing manager for five hears, Olivia accidentally discovered her passion for teaching, especially in communication writing.     Miya Denison (COM ‘21) chatted with The BU COMmu Miya Denison (COM ‘21) chatted with The BU COMmunicator about how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected her life as a student-athlete. While her senior year at Boston University was far from normal, quarantining and taking a break from field hockey helped her reset and fall in love with the sport again. Despite the limitations the pandemic has on team sports, Miya is still excited to get back on the field and play the sport that she loves. After graduation, she hopes to continue her education at Boston University in the Public Relations M.S. program at the College of Communication.     Yesterday, BU COM hosted Marisa Moseley (CAS’04) Yesterday, BU COM hosted Marisa Moseley (CAS’04), Kevin Merida (COM’79) and moderator A. Sherrod Blake to discuss the relationship between sports and antiracism. Starting with a brief discussion about Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling in 2016, the three discussed how sports relate to the racial movement in the US today. Moseley is the BU women’s basketball team head coach and Merida is a senior Vice President at ESPN and the editor-in-chief of The Undefeated. Merida believes that sports have a long way to go to reach racial equity. On the topic of spreading awareness, Moseley said, “We all have platforms, because we all have voices.” The conversation worked to create an understanding of where sports stand today with respect to race and what needs to change.
    Two weeks ago, during the NFL’s annual Super Bow Two weeks ago, during the NFL’s annual Super Bowl, many advertising fanatics tuned in for the iconic commercials. Michelle Sullivan, an advertising professor herself, shared her insights on this year’s Super Bowl ads! With this year’s Super Bowl being unique as a result of the pandemic, Professor Sullivan discussed the marketing messages and strategies different brands used to advertise during one of the most watched annual sporting events in the world. As the most famous hackathon-style PR event at COM, PRoBono features with rejuvenating the brand for clients in 12+ hours staying up all night with PJs and coffee. 
This year, gathering around via Zoom, volunteers did an excellent job helped three clients with brilliant ideas.
