But in all seriousness, it’s been quite an interesting school year being so far away from my family for the first time. What that means is that I spend more holidays away from home than ever before. Thanksgiving? Nope. Easter? Definitely not. No time for cross-country flights when there’s only a few days to spare.

Do any of you feel the same? Anyone out there feeling homesick and really need a hug?

Well, I have the perfect idea to solve our problems.

And no, it’s not a hug. Even though I do give pretty good ones if anyone is feeling particularly desperate.

What we need are some adoptive families. People that live close by, and for some reason or other feel an overwhelming desire to shower us with objects of affection. This can include food: “Oh Sally, do you feel homesick? Why don’t you come over for dinner tonight and we’ll make your favorite … With warm peach cobbler for dessert.” This can also include presents: “Joe, my main man, what’s up? Here’s 50 bucks, go find a girlfriend and take her out somewhere nice … It’s on us!” Best case scenario, this can include all sorts of incredibly convenient things: “Come with us on our vacation to Jamaica!” “Here, take my private jet for a spin.” “I promised your mother I’d look out for you up here … here’s your next year’s tuition at BU!”

Unless your name is Pip and you happen to live in a Charles Dickens novel, then this highly desirable benefactor is probably very unlikely.

But if you find one of them, let the rest of us club members know. Then we can stop COMplaining about all our dirty laundry. And maybe get some homemade chocolate chip cookies out of it too.
