The Sydney Sider

G’day mates! Greetings from Down Under. My name is Katelyn Stokes, and I am a junior majoring in advertising and pursuing a minor in business administration. Currently, I am abroad participating in BU’s Sydney Internship Program.

During the first six weeks of the program, I have been taking two classes: Brand Advertising and Promotion and Australian Anthropologie. Learning about the surfies, blokes and Aussie culture has been great, but exploring OZ has definitely been the best part!

So far, I have ventured on a cruise around the Sydney Harbor, celebrated Australia Day (the equivalent of our Independence Day), seen a play at the Opera House and learned how to surf! Oh, and going to the different beaches around the city each weekend isn’t too bad either.

One piece of advice though: if you come to Australia wear tons of sunscreen! The sun is more intense here because there is a hole in the ozone. As fair-skinned shiela, I use zinc oxide, but it’s a bit difficult to rub in.

Anyway, I digress. Back to travel.

My favorite place in Australia thus far is the breathtaking Fraser Island —the largest sand island in the world.

With long, white sandy beaches (where the sand is so fine you can polish your crystal) flanked by strikingly colored sand cliffs and over 100 freshwater lakes, the island is truly a natural wonder. Also, it is the only place in the world were ancient rainforests grow on the sand.

Oy mate! All that beauty in one weekend, what to do on Spring Break? No worries! My roommate and I have a plan. We are headed to the Red Centre (the Outback).

After Spring Break, expect heaps of stories about Ayers Rock and Aboriginal culture.

Cheers!

Katelyn
